1. PHONOLOGICAL AND PHONEMIC AWARENESS ACTIVITY:

• Identifying sounds within a word, breaking apart sounds in a word, blending together sounds in a word

• Phonemic Awareness is an important skill in the foundation of reading - You must be able to hear and manipulate sounds in words prior to reading - without this skill you cannot blend sounds (read) or break apart sounds (spell)

2. VISUAL ACTIVITY:

• Sound/letter correspondence or reading of words depending on reading level

3. REVIEW OF PREVIOUSLY LEARNED CONCEPT:

• Integrated review of previous concepts provides students with a strong foundation

4. INTRODUCE NEW CONCEPT:

• Use a multi-sensory approach to explicitly teach new concept

• Reading + spelling work with new concept

5. FLUENCY:

• Fluency is important in reading comprehension and general comfort with reading - as you become more fluent in reading your brain power can be used for comprehending what you are learning rather than thinking about how to read the word
